This year we have already seen the introduction of the Facebook cover image and now we have the Twitter header image.

How to add a Twitter header image

You can use the Twitter profile page on the web to upload your image. Go to the “settings” section, and then “design”. In the “Customize your own” section, you will see the new choice for header image.

Here are the specifications for the image that you can use:
 - Minimum dimensions of 1252×626
 - Maximum file size of 5MB

Once you have made a selection for the image you want to use, you can then scale it to fit. Note that the image appears behind your avatar, so be mindful of the contrast with your bio text, and the fit with your Avatar.

You can also make the changes using the latest Twitter app on a mobile device. You have to select the “Me” navigation first, then the “settings” icon, and then the “edit profile” button.

If your device has a camera, you will see an option for “take photo” as well as
“Choose existing photo”.

Now if you would like to customize your header image even further, why not use a
template so that your avatar matches your header image? Kevin Mullett at Cirrus abs created a PhotoShop template, and a .png format cheat sheet in case you do not have PhotoShop. Here is a link to both resources.

Clever Examples

Finally, here are some examples of some of the first designs. The article is called “10 Twitter Header Images Done Right” however who is to say if they are done right? They are nice examples but whatever works for you is what is important.

Have fun with creating some nice designs!
