Pinterest is the flavor of the month
Everyone is talking about it. Who is on Pinterest so far? Is it just for women or can men join in too? Is it just for B2C, or can B2B join in too? Even the spammers love it! It was the fastest independent website to hit 10 million monthly unique visitors.
At the start of 2012 it had 11.7 million monthly unique visitors. Pinterest succeeds in showing content in a simple very easy to consume way. Check out the boards from HGTV, Whole foods, president Barack Obama and one of my personal favorites, GE.
Of course, yours truly is also on Pinterest, as the Social Media Jedi..
What has proved interesting for me was that Pinterest was my number 1 referral for my blog last month, amazingly pushing Twitter into second place! Here are my top 5 referral sites from last month:
1 - Pinterest
2 - Twitter
3 - Hootsuite
4 - Linkedin
5 - Google+
Is there a secret formula for success?
We are now seeing many suggestions as to how to succeed on Pinterest. The latest is from Dan Zarella. Of course, ultimate success for many brands in Pinterest will not be in the action based tasks like re-pins and likes but rather looking further towards the business KPIs that follow those activities like sales, leads, signups etc. Brands must have a strategy for Pinterest that goes beyond pins and re-pins, but at the start, there must be a learning curve.
The best way to succeed is to not force it. Do not cram the site with product pictures. Start with objectives, develop a tactical approach in line with your marketing and brand strategy. Who are you trying to reach and why? What do you want them to do? What tone of voice should you have?
There is obviously a visual theme to the channel, so think how you can display your own individual style or brand in a visual way. Don’t spoil the experience by spamming and having several pictures all linked to your landing page. Oh no. Experiment, learn, and succeed.
There are ways to measure progress.
There is no back door to success, and you knew that all along! Good thing is that there are many new ways to track progress.
I like using Pinreach. Then we have Pinerly and Curalate to come. So once you start, settle in, and start tracking your progress to success. I will create posts which detail these tools in the very near future.
I am enjoying my time in Pinterest, and I have managed to use it along side Instagram without too many problems. I would confess that Instagram still swallows up the majority of my time compared to Pinterest, but that might change over the coming months.
Do you work for a company that has started using Pinterest? Have you started using Pinterest privately as an individual? Maybe you are learning the ropes, and working out what works for you. Have you been spammed yet?
